Floating Vacations
In addition to the days that Lake Shore Prep is closed,
students enrolled in the elementary grades enjoy floating vacations. Each student
may take up to 15 vacation days during the school year. This way, families may vacation at
their own convenience and avoid the headaches and expense of peak travel times. We
also hope that this is a benefit to parents who have difficulty being away from work
during traditional school vacation times.
We feel that our curriculum is individualized enough to allow for such a flexible vacation
policy. As each student has unique strengths and weaknesses, our teachers teach to
the individual student--not to the whole class. Thus, if a child is the only one on
vacation at a specific time (s)he will not be in danger of "missing a whole
unit." To facilitate the teacher's job, vacations must be submitted a minimum
of two weeks in advance.
Hours of Operation
Public, parochial and other private schools generally offer a
6-7 hour school day. Families who want or need more hours are faced with the
additional tuition of Before and After School programs. These programs can cost as much as
$50 per dayand some require parents to provide their own transportation. Lake
Shore Prep's all inclusive tuition covers the hours of 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.10 1/2
hours
per day.
Preschool and Junior Kindergarten
Students in Preschool and Junior Kindergarten may enroll for
2, 3, 4 or 5 days a week for half day, three-quarter day or full day programs
(or any combination). This allows families to custom-design a schedule to meet
their needs. Parents may also extend the length of a day when needed or occasionally
add an extra day, provided there is space in the class. We have continued this option
through Junior Kindergarten, as we recognize that all 4 year olds are not necessarily
developmentally ready to attend school 5 days a week. Tuition is based on the
student's schedule.
Senior Kindergarten
Students in Senior Kindergarten must be in attendance from
9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. each day. Tuition, however, is all-inclusive and covers
the hours of 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Elementary Grades
Students in First and Second Grade must be in attendance from
8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day. Tuition, however, is all-inclusive and
covers the hours of 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Winter Week
Since many families vacation at the end of December, each
year, around Christmas and New Year's Day, we have Winter Week, with an alternative
curriculum. Plans might include rehearsing and performing a play or doing a special
service project for one of the local senior citizen groups. For Winter Week 1998,
our First Grade students filmed a movie. They wrote it, made costumes and filmed it
at school and "on location."
