A Day in the Life of the
Preschool Program
Circle: The children gather together in a circle to start their day
with friends and teachers. During this time, children may discuss the
day's weather, review who is at school today, and explore their weekly topic
through books, finger play, songs, and other activities.
Centers: In addition to planned activities, children are able to
choose from a wide variety of learning areas in their classroom. Choices
include mixing colored sand in the sensory table, exploring with magnifying
glasses in the science center, building a zoo for the animals in the block area,
experimenting with geo-boards in the math area, reading books in the classroom,
and painting with paper tubes in the art area.
Gym: Each day children head to gym to explore the different equipment available
or to participate in group activities such as parachute games, scarf dancing, or
other music and movement activities.
Spanish: Our Spanish teacher visits the preschool classroom each day
for a fifteen minute Spanish session. During this time, children have the opportunity
to learn meaningful vocabulary through stories, songs, and games.
Playground: The preschool children enjoy the playground both in the
mornings and afternoons. Children have the opportunity to utilize the
playground equipment, sand toys, and their imagination to explore the nature
around them.
Highlights of the Day
While studying transportation the preschoolers learned that not everyone gets
to school in the same way. During circle time, the class decided to graph
the different ways children get to school. From the graph it was discovered that
friends get to school by walking, traveling in a car, bus or taxi, or even by
riding a bicycle! A family volunteered to bring a bicycle the next day
during "sharing" so that the children could explore it and discuss
bike safety.
