A Day in the Life of the
Senior Kindergarten Program
Our Senior Kindergarten (SK) day begins at 9:00 am and lasts until 1:30
p.m. Drop off and pick up is available from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Meeting: The SK students begin their day with a meeting to
discuss daily activities such as calendar, weather, number line, attendance,
pledge of allegiance and job helpers. During this time, students discuss lesson
plans related to the weekly unit.
Centers: There are a variety of activities available to the SK
students in the centers. In addition to the planned activities,
children make choices in the dramatic play, computer, science, math, writing,
book, and art centers. They work on various skills such as recognizing
money for their math activity, identifying beginning letter sounds, or working
on spelling simple words with word games.
Journals: During journal time, the SK students use their writing and
reading skills as they work with sight words and letters of the week. Our
journals are a great source of pride for the SK students as well as a great way
to document a child's progress.
Playground / Gym: The SK students have daily gym and playground time
in the mornings as well as in the afternoons with our after-school
program. Children are able to participate in a variety of group games or
make use of the equipment on the playground.
After rest time, the SK students join our after-school program for the
remainder of the day. Children have the opportunity for gym and playground
activities, stories , art activities, and even a time set aside for quiet work
in the "homework room."
Highlights of the Day
The Senior Kindergarten class studied the political process with the help of
their Weekly Readers. The children were able to understand the role of the
President and imagine what they would do if they were President. The
Senior Kindergartners also learned where the President and his family
live. They investigated the many different rooms of the White House and
then used sugar cubes to design and create their very own White House.
