SENIOR KINDERGARTEN GOALS
The predominant goal in the Senior Kindergarten is to develop a community of learners.
The children's maturation is an important contributor to learning because it
provides the framework from which their learning proceeds. Physically, they are more
coordinated, and thus better able to manipulate and explore their environment.
Cognitively, they are better able to understand the point of view of other people.
They are at a stage where they are motivated to learn by a desire to make sense of their
world. They see how reading, writing and
math are useful and are inspired to gain more knowledge. Given the childrenšs
developmental readiness, it is in Senior Kindergarten that we build a foundation for
learning the knowledge and skills recognized by our culture as important, primarily the
abilities to read, write and calculate numerically. At the same time, the children
are developing self-control learning to wait, take turns and control their impulses.
By the end of SK, our goal is for the children to enjoy learning and to be active
learners.
