CLASS SIZE
At Lake Shore Prep, we believe that children learn best when they are in small classes
where they receive a great deal of individual attention from their teachers. Small
classes give the teachers an opportunity to get to know each student as an individual and
better determine the childıs learning style. Small classes also enable the teachers
to develop a relationship with each childıs family.
Student Teacher Ratios
Our youngest Preschoolers (2 year olds) are in
classes of 14 students with 2 teachers. Classes of students who are just turning 3
at the beginning of the school year are in a class of 16-18 with 2 teachers.
Our older Preschoolers (3 year olds) and Junior Kindergartners are in classes
of 10 with 1 teacher. The Senior Kindergartners
and elementary grades have a maximum class size of 15 students
with 1 teacher.
In addition to the child's homeroom teacher, we also employ several floaters.
Floaters have the same credentials as the homeroom teachers. They provide extra
support in the classroom, as well as substituting for teachers when they are absent.
Additionally, we also have a Spanish teacher, gym teacher & ballet teacher.
Solving the Socialization Issues of Small Classes
Having chosen to have small classes because of
the many benefits to the students, we recognize that small classes can lead to
socialization issues as the children spend a great deal of time with a very small variety
of children. To remedy the
potential problems that may be caused by this, we schedule time with other classes into
their day. For instance, this year JK-A has gym class with JK-C, academic time with
JK-E,
playground with JK-B and JK-D and lunch with the entire JK. This gives the children
in JK-A a chance to develop relationships in the entire JK, while still reaping the
benefits of being in a small class. In addition to mixing within the classes, the
children are also given the opportunity to make friends and develop relationships with
children in other grade levels.
